Recruiters can be one of the greatest assets on your side whether you are looking for a job or are happy with your current position. Here are our tips on how to make the most of recruiters no matter where you are in your career.

When You Aren’t Looking

If you have an in-demand role, such as Java Developer, you may hear from recruiters more often than you might like. It can be very frustrating to have to constantly be fielding these queries, but you can make saying “no” work to your advantage. When a recruiter contacts you, start by communicating with them politely. Be honest with them if you are not currently looking, but also tell them what kind of position would interest you, or the types of benefits which might convince you to move jobs.

Try to build a relationship with them, encouraging them to follow up with you at another time. If your contract ends at a certain time or if you want to give yourself more time at new job/company, let them know. Sharing information about why you are not interested in leaving now can strengthen your relationship, which may ultimately help your long-term career goals and future job searches.

We encourage you to seek a variety of good recruiters. These are the recruiters who will follow up when you’ve suggested they should and who share positions with you that may be of interest. Having 4 or 5 good recruiters on your side can act as an “insurance card” to keep you from ever having to scour job boards again.

When You Start Looking

If you have been proactive and built solid recruiter relationships ahead of time, you can avoid posting your resume when you start looking for a new job. Simply contact your recruiters, let them know what you are looking for, and tell them how quickly you would like to be in that position.

If you haven’t built relationships with recruiters yet, you still have options. Do some research on local tech recruiting or staffing agencies. Check Glassdoor and similar sites to learn about their reputation, then contact individual recruiters at those companies via LinkedIn. Ideally, you’ll want to contact senior recruiters who have been with their firm for a few years or are experienced in the field.

If you still have little luck, you could try applying directly for positions through agency sites or on LinkedIn.  Posting your resume on job boards and applying via sites like Career Builder can lead to your information being added to databases everywhere, so you may want to avoid this path. Endless calls and emails from less-than-stellar recruiters only makes your job search more difficult in the long run.

How to Get the Best Results

To get the best results from working with a recruiter, be willing to meet in person. It’s a great way for them to learn more about you, your personality, and your desired career path. This knowledge helps them find better job matches for you. Recruiters and their partners, business development managers, will also go to bat for candidates they’ve met in person—they will remember you when new opportunities come up, put you up for more positions, and push harder with hiring managers if they know you. This can be critical to ultimately getting the role.

Follow up with your recruiters when actively looking. If you’ve been submitted to a job or had an interview, you can follow up after one or two days if you haven’t received any feedback. If the recruiter has not yet submitted you to a job or the job they submitted you to didn’t pan out, follow up with your recruiter roughly once a week to stay at the forefront of their mind. If nothing seems to fit after a month, limit communication to once a month. Remember that unless you are returning communications from your recruiter, contacting them daily is usually not necessary.
